Sunlight is a free and infinite source of energy. Solar energy does not produce air pollution or hazardous waste. Switching to solar energy can cut your heating and cooling costs in half. With the spread of green energy and increased affordability, many homeowners are considering to use solar air conditioners instead of other cooling devices. However people from different places have different demands on solar air conditioners.

Project Background

Our client, located in UAE, but live in the desert, where has no public grid at all. Because it is very hot all year round and he wants to use 100% solar air conditioner to replace existing dc air coolers.

Design Request

To install air conditioners in two bedrooms and one living room

Bedroom, about 25 square meters each

Living room, about 40 square meters

Solution

For living room with 40m2, we recommend a 18000BTU model.

For 2 bedrooms with 25m2 each, we recommend a 12000BTU model

What is included in the whole set?

It is a 100% DC48V solar air conditioner with compressors that can operate on DC. A combination technology involves a direct current (DC) air conditioning system that has been integrated with a 48V DC outdoor unit, an indoor unit, GEL batteries, controller and solar panels.

A 100% unit running on solar energy uses a DC power supply. These are called "off-grid" because they do not require power from utility companies, for example, they do not have to be plugged in. They use only DC power (from solar panels) and use an external battery backup. Even when the sun is not shining, the battery will continue to power whole system, mainly during nights.

Questions of Client

If he wants system to work for longer hours, can we change the configuration of solar panels and battery? And How?

Yes, we can change the configuration to suit different working period and hours of air conditioners. Here we take 12000btu as an example, the standard unit is working for about 8 hours a day. If client wants it to work for 10 hours, we need to increase the number of solar panels and GEL battery.


If a 12000BTU working 12 hours a day, it needs total electricity consumption=800W*12=9.6KWH.

The client is located in UAE, so here we choose Dubai as design basis.


How to Choose A 100% Solar Air Conditioner-2


According to average sun insolation here every month, 1KW solar panel can produce about 4.5KWH electricity a day.

9.6/4.5=2.2KW solar panels

If we use poly solar panel 320W, totally 7 pcs are needed. And considering it is a DC48V system, finally we need to add 1 more solar panel (totally 8 pcs) to power whole air conditioner.

Battery Capacity

In Dubai, there is very good sunshine all year round, especially in hot summer days. We assume battery supply electricity to home appliance for one day.

Batteries capacity is AH, Battery Voltage is 12V

Total electricity consumption=9600WH=9600VAH

Total battery capacity = 9600/12=800AH

If we use 200AH battery, it needs 800/200=4 pieces battery

In a short word, if client want his air conditioner to work 12 hours a day, the whole air conditioner system need 8 pcs 320W solar panels and 4 pcs 200AH GEL battery.
